Evraz receives second fine in 3 months

Worker’s foot injured on piece of waste metal while riding railcar

Evraz Canada has been fined $90,000, plus a surcharge of $36,000, for a total of $126,000. This is the second six-figure fine for the company in three months.

The Toronto-based company pleaded guilty to one count under Saskatchewan’s Occupational Health and Safety regulations in Regina Provincial Court on June 17. Evraz Canada pleaded guilty to contravening subsection 69(1) of the regulations: being an employer, fail, while workers were present at a work site, to provide lighting that is sufficient to protect the health and safety of workers and suitable for the work to be done at the site, resulting in serious injury to a worker.

Charges stemmed from an incident that occurred in Regina on Sept. 30, 2016.  A worker’s foot was injured when it struck a piece of waste metal while the employee was riding on a railcar.
