Excavation cage on site but not installed

WorkSafeBC fines company more than $21,000

J. Cote & Son Excavating has been fined $21,566 by WorkSafeBC for an incident in Campbell River, B.C.

This firm was working on the installation of a sewer line. WorkSafeBC observed one of the firm's workers in an excavation which had near vertical sides and a depth of about 2 metres.

There was an excavation support cage on site but contrary to the specifications of a professional engineer, it was not installed in the excavation. The firm failed to ensure that, prior to worker entry, the excavation was sloped, benched, shored, or supported as required.

This was a repeated and high-risk violation.
