Worker struck on head by sound panel

Saskatoon company fined $80,000

Carmont Construction has been fined a total of $80,000 for violating one count under Saskatchewan’s Occupational Health and Safety legislation resulting in a workplace fatality.

The family-run Saskatoon company pleaded guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court on July 12 to contravening clause 12(b) of the regulations — failing to make arrangements for the use, handling and transport of sound barrier panels in a manner that protects the health and safety of workers.

The company was fined $57,143 with a $22,857 surcharge.

The work site fatality occurred on Nov. 30, 2016, in Saskatoon, when 19-year-old Austyn Schenstead was struck on the head by a sound panel when it gave way and slid off the deck of a trailer.
