Western Canadian Steel fined for fall protection system failure

Worker fell 5.5 metres to ground, sustained serious injuries

WCS Western Canadian Steel has been fined $90,000 inclusive of the 15 per cent victim fine surcharge. The company pled guilty to Section 189 of the Alberta OHS Code, failure to ensure equipment was contained, restrained or protected to eliminate potential danger.

On Dec. 15, 2014, a worker was on the roof of a building in Lloydminster, Alta., seaming metal panels when the worker lost footing and slid off of the roof. The worker’s fall protection system failed as a direct result of the anchor point failing. The worker fell 5.5 metres to the ground and sustained serious injuries.

All other charges were withdrawn.
